We have had some really great powder skiing in Chamonix this week! We finally got to ski serious powder after a really dry start of the season. This is the schedule of a really great week...

30.000 vertical metres in one day!

I went for a "full" day of skiing together with Tormod Granheim a couple of days ago. We decided to try and do as many vertical metres as possible during one day on Grands Montets. We mostly stayed in the pist as the snow conditions have been quite poor lately.

The ambition was to ski two times the height of Everest, meaning 17.700 vertical metres. We had a bit of a bad start and ended up missing the first cable-car and got a bit stuck in the crowds the first hour of skiing and the ambition seemed quite far away. We decided to change strategy and started skiing intense laps in the "Bouchard"-lift. It turned out to be a very efficient way of collection vertical metres and we reached 17.700 vertical metres around two a’ clock in the afternoon.

We decided to continue and now aim for three times the heigth of Everest, meaning 26.550 metres. We kept on going in the "Bouchard"-lift and after of another two hours of intense skiing we had reached this new ambition as well. Since there was still time to go we just kept on going and managed to reach 30.000 vertical metres! Definitely a personal record! We skied for a bit more than eight hour which meant 35 runs in total.

Fishing at ISPO

I’m back in Chamonix after spending four days at ISPO in Münich. ISPO is the biggest trade show for winter sports in Europe with 160,000 square meters of exhibition floor at the New Munich Trade Fair. There are 1,806 exhibitors from 49 countries!

Four days at ISPO meant a bit of a break in my training regime but since the trade fair is so big I got my training anyways running back and forth while meeting up with sponsors and journalists interested in the Everest expedition. And everything went well, better than expected; the interest in our ski expedition to Everest is enormous!

But, I’m back in Chamonix and it’s as dry as ever. I don’t know if I have ever seen as bad conditions in beginning February as this year. And the weather forecast is not very encouraging; blue skies and sunshine…
