We launched 4 months ago and an active community of global travelers is emerging. Users are sharing all kinds of trips, from sailing in Greece, to driving through Namibia in a 4x4, to scooter trips in Hawaii and hundreds more trips!

One cool way to share your latest trip is to embed a FULLY INTERACTIVE trip map into your own blog. For example, take a look at this flight above San Francisco and Silicon Valley.

Joost, Greg and Herman are back in the mountains

After our ski expedition to Cho Oyu in the spring of 2004 the 3 of us went our own way: Herman to Malawi to work as a doctor in a hospital, Greg became a consultant in Rotterdam and Paris, and I went to California to go to business school.

When we arrived in Meribel on December 26th, mountains where covered with a thin, icy layer of snow, with many sharp rocks sticking through. The weather service predicted "neige faible" for the nex couple of days. Not very good news...

But when we arrived in Verbier on December 30 it started to snow.

Finally

The first couple of days of 2006 brought clear days and snowy nights. In 3-4 days some 60 cm of fresh snow fell from the sky in Verbier. The Chamonix area got at least twice as much. The cold temperatures caused the snow to remain very powderish for days.

I skied in Squaw Valley on Sunday. There are just 2 real runs open (Shirley Lake and Siberia), and the snow on these runs is actually pretty good. I guess "packed powder" is a good description of the conditions.

We definitely need a big dump of snow before it will look anything like last's years conditions, when there was more than 6 feet of snow already at this time of the year.

At the end of this week I am off to Europe. The snow conditions in the Alps are mixed at the moment. Looking forward to do hit the slopes with my buddies back home!

Andy from The Unofficial Alpine Meadows Ski Report comes with some good news today:

I have returned to Lake Tahoe to witness the sky darken, temperatures drop, winds howl, and rain or snow fall to the ground. The weather people say this will continue for a day or two with snow levels dropping as time moves along. No one is predicting enough snow to begin the ski season, but the ground is cooling and the possibility seems to be in the air. Perhaps we will luck out and have a few slopes available for Thanksgiving.

Not as good as last year when we made our first tracks on October 30, but I don't complain :)
