Everest interactive map update

Thank you for all the very positive reactions on the Everest map! We put in a lot of work in making it work the way you want it, and we appreciate your continued feedback to make it even better.

Just to clarify, the live feeds of Everest bloggers will be added to the map soon, when the climbers start blogging from Nepal/ Tibet. Most of the climbers will be making their way to Nepal in the next couple of days. (I just came of a skype call with Victor Saunders who will be flying out of Chamonix in a couple of hours, and it sounded like the usual last minute excitement, or should I say stress :), which I remember so vividly from Cho Oyu two years ago.)

For now, the Everest map just contains waypoints, pictures and descriptions for the classic North and South routes. The waypoints appear once the checkboxes are clicked, but it may take a couple of seconds. As some of you mentioned the topo map is a bit blurry when zoomed in further, but the filesize would be too big if we were to make the map more detailed. A couple of you also commented about the fact that the satellite images are not available when zoomed in 2 levels more. Unfortunately we cannot do anything about that, until Google adds more detailed images to their system.

We also appreciate your feedback on the accuracy of coordinates, descriptions, pictures, etc. One reader pointed out that last year an additional ladder was placed on the second step. The waypoint description is already updated. We will be moving towards a more "wikistyle" content updating system, where any reader can help improve the content and accuracy of the site, but we will need to make the software more stable first.

For now, enjoy playing with the map and reading the blogs. And please keep on giving us feedback in this blog or by emailing to team AT everytrail DOT net

Everest 2006 updates

Everest 2006 updates will be published on this blog.

EveryTrail bloggers Tomas Olsson and Victor Saunders will be climbing Everest and keep you up-to-date by sending blogs, podcasts and GPS coordinates to EveryTrail. Their progress will be visualized on an interactive Everest map. We hope you will be as excited by it as we are!
